It seems like the best kitty toys at our house are cheap things we find around the house.
The plastic piece that unlocks a plastic milk container, a string of binding, shaking dental floss (you keep holding onto it though), cardboard bent into the shape of a tube, shaking a stick back and forth in the grass.
Any creative ideas for kitties as they get older?

One of those laser light pointers. They will jump up a wall trying to catch the little red dot.
I like to knit or crochet little yarn mice (they're really just a triangle you fold in half and sew up the edges) filled with mostly fiberfill stuffing and a little catnip. They love them.

I don't know... My cat's still both love their cardboard boxes... Any shape and size, it's better if they can't get all the way into it... They'll fight for hours trying to figure out what's inside.
They also really like anything with feathers... I've got a piece of fabric with feathers on the end that they'll chase for hours!
I made some small "mice" for them to play with -- my oldest will bat at, and chase them for hours... When he's not doing that, he's carrying them...
They're not hard... It's essentially a rounded pyramid shape about 1.5 - 2" long on the bottom... Sew it up, put a yarn tail on it. As long as you use light material (I used a bit of satin and some TP to stuff it) it bounces around like crazy.
Have fun!!

My cats definitely like cardboard boxes. We make various "structures" out of them and they like to climb around, in and on them. We also have several carpet towers around the house. They like to jump up to the different levels and survey their domain from there. We have one of those motorized cat toys - http://www.amazon.com/Loco-Motion-Electronic-Cat-Toy/dp/B000N9W7HWOur cats went crazy for it at first but once they realized it was stationary they calmed down. Still, they enjoy playing with it.

Oh yes - a cardboard box and kitty is in heaven!
My brother's cat fell in love with the christmas tree last year - but she didn't pull the ornaments, she found that she could hide behind it and pounce on unsuspecting toesies that came within reach.
She's also developed a passion for used emery boards and will play with one for hours! My mother keeps a stash of them now for when she comes to visit and I also send my used ones up to her as well.
My friends and family, however, always say the I seem to be an ideal cat toy.

My cats love the boxes too. Boxes that bubble wrap come in are great because only half of one side is open for pulling out bubble wrap. There is only about a 6 inch opening so they can crawl in and hide and sleep without anyone knowing they are there. A brown paper bag laid on it's side, especially if I tear a hole in the bottom of it so they can bat other unsuspecting kitties.
We have a small frog made out of shiny material that chirps if you squeeze it. They carry that around the house in their mouth.
Also the feathers on a string is a BIG favorite... but a quick fix that always works around here is a balled up piece of paper or aluminum foil.

Hello All,
Yes, boxes and bags make wonderful toys for cats. I am thinking about the Roomba after watching the video the link to which Phyllis posted in another thread. Hilarious!

Ha, ha ha ha...I thought about a Roomba too. It would kill 2 birds with one stone, entertain the kitties and vacuum my rug. Elton Brown would love it...a multitasking product.

Dear WalkingGranny,
Ha! Ha! Now that's it. Multitasking is the way to go. You know how hard it is to get cats to do things when they don't want to do what you ask. Well, our cats could do the vacuuming and think they are playing. All we have to do is train them to guide the Roomba in the right directions. :-)

cardboard box, they always love dont they,a scratching post. You can get a toy called a spider glove hand. Theyhave pom poms on the end the kitten can play with, helps with bonding so they say.
