Type Two diabetes also strikes women who are average weight, get sufficient exercise, eat moderately and otherwise take good care of themselves, including women who research and take supplements to improve their chance of enjoying a healthy life.
Insulin resistance can occur in women who are dedicated to healthy lifestyles, especially those over age 50 or so. Some women with Type Two develop diabetes because their bodies don't make enough insulin for their weight, and some because they develop insulin resistance so what should be sufficient insulin doesn't get used properly. In Type One diabetes, insulin is not produced at all, and that is why people with T1D always need insulin injections (or the pump).
So, if a woman's body is not making enough insulin for the extra weight she is carrying, and she loses the weight, that cause is gone. And if she has Type Two because of insulin resistance, and she takes pills that deal with insulin resistance, she can have better control of high blood sugar.
Low blood sugar is still a danger, though. Having too much insulin, or a combination of not enough food, mildly strenuous exercise, or excess insulin can cause dizziness and confusion, convulsions or unconsciousness. Extremely high blood sugar can also cause more immediate dangerous symptoms, too.
I think it's important that we warn relatively slender, fit women who have healthy eating habits and lifestyles that they can also develop Type Two diabetes. I wish everyone over the age of 50 would have an A1C test with their yearly blood check ups.
And of course, most of us would benefit from healthier nutrition and better health habits even if we don't develop diabetes.
;-).
Thanks for the great article on diabetes education and treatment!
