My cable provider has a ton of "radio stations" that I can choose from - several of the new age ones are very peaceful and relaxing. I also have a "plasma window" dvd which is all fish swimming around in high definition. It's very soothing and you can have it with the natural fish sounds or with a new age track.
Do you guys put on any soundtrack when you meditate? Or do you go with silence, or maybe "white noise" like my humidifier to block out cars and dogs and things?
I was thinking I'd go with gentle new age music - no words, but just something to block out the occasional car or noise ...

That is a very good question. I like to do a music meditation with Beethoven.
Here's one of my articles on how to do a music meditation:

I think with many classical music works I know / enjoy them so much that I begin to get caught up in the music rather than releasing thoughts with meditation So with the new age pieces, I don't know them and can not get caught in that same trap. Of course I suppose if I begin listening to new age too much I'll start to know the songs and run into the same trouble

I found that listening to music when trying to meditate led me to imagining. I would try to listen to soft, slow instrumental music for peaceful background then found I was seeing myself dancing to the music, which was relaxing, but did not help me to let my mind bring out my inner thoughts. So, I meditate with a scented candle burning and focus on the candle flame till my mind is able to push all outside noises away.

I have heard of the Native American flute music, it is beautiful. I'm trying to get my husband to listen to the "sounds of waves" on the moodscapes CD, for relaxation as I feel this will help with his blood pressure. Thanks Mary Caliendo Tea

Susan, what a great article, thank you! This is how I have meditated for years and it works very well for me. My breathing count is: inhale count 8, hold count 8, exhale count 12. This really relaxes me for the meditation process. (I am so used to the count that I do not even have to count anymore, it just comes natural and it also helps me greatly with the COPD problems I have). After I have established my breathing pattern I then focus on the flame and let the thoughts come in and focus on only the one I need clarification on. Thanks for sharing the article!
