OK, I have my cushion. I have incense already. I have a spot I clear out for yoga, so I can put my cushion there. I can use music or non-music. Is there anything else that could be helpful in preparing my area to meditate in? I know you don't "need" anything to meditate, but I'm having fun with this

If you wish to practice Tratak or candle gazing, place a candle on a shelf at eye level.
Here's an article on how to do tratak meditation:

That's a great article, and a great idea! OK, I'll set up a candle - that sounds like a lovely idea

huh. hmmm. I have always been intimidated by meditation, or at least the sitting down and doing nothing aspect of it (I consider hiking a moving meditation). I am interested to hear how this goes for you Lisa!

I do think setting the mood helps. I know that when i pull out my yoga mat and strap, i start to mentally relax and be receptive. Along these lines, I think i am only interested in yoga DVDs that feature gorgeous outdoor settings. I really enjoy looking at the scenery and incorporating that into my practice. So that is also scene setting. I don't even want to close my eyes when instructed and miss a moment of the soothing blue ocean, for example.

That's so interesting! I really like closing my eyes during those sessions and cutting out all external input, to just relax in the "darkness" It sounds like you have an ocean craving. What if you added more ocean visualization into your world? Maybe have a poster or two of ocean scenes on your walls - an ocean background on your computer, and get a DVD or two of ocean scenes?

It's not pictures of ocean - it's the movement, the sound, the light on water. But in a sense you are right - I have an "outdoors" craving. The grand canyon is another craving that doesn't go away. And Joshua Tree park. And any place where I can look at water moving!

Okey dokey! I have three different fountains in the house, they were only $19.95 each I think. I have them in different rooms. One has a cool spinning marble sphere on top of it. This one is in my office You should get a fountain or two so you can have moving, flowing water around you!

You can always decorate them with grasses and river stones and other things to give them a different look
