Let's say you're on a bus and someone sits next to you. They start doing something disgusting (e.g., picking their nose). That is a good sign for you to watch your pockets, wallet or purse. Pickpockets will use a diversion that may cause you to look away.

This thread for for anyone to post safety and security tips while traveling or just getting around in your everyday life.

Be Safe Tip: When parking your car on a trip, hide valuables or take with you. Many West Coast areas are remote and vulnerable. If your interior looks clean and empty, it is more undesirable for an opportunistic thief. Kids will break in for cash, change, CDs.

I have a whistle attached to my keyring. It is really for my nonverbal autistic son to use if he runs away, but could be used to alert others and scare away would be criminals.

Before traveling overseas, make a copy of your passport and other identification, including the numbers on travelers check, and leave the copies with a family member at home. If you did get robbed, it is easier to get track your identification.

Another tip I've heard before: Attackers preying on women may grab you by the hair. Keep that in mind if you have long hair (especially in a pony tail).

Week's safety tip: These are simple but easy to not take seriously.

Before you enter your car, LOOK in the back seat to make sure no one is hiding there.

After you're in your car, lock all doors immediately.
