In every restaurant I've ever worked in (from my mom's caterer service, to her family restaurant, to a truck stop, to linens and crystal type restaurant) tips have been very important.
They actually got more imprtant, the "Classier" the restaurant got. Because restaurant, by law, are only required to pay 1/2 of what minimum wage is - the assimption is made thst the difference will be made up in tips.
And most reataurants pool their tips at the end of the night and divy them out equally. Which is why life can become very uncomfrotable for a waiter(ess) to goof off and leave the majority of work to the others. That person will quickly find themselves bussing tables or washing dishes!
