"The California Highway Patrol says 8-to-12 million bees escaped Sunday from the crates in which they were stored and swarmed over an area of Highway 99 and stung officers, firefighters and tow truck drivers trying to clear the accident."

I'm not allergic to bees but my husband is. That would be his worst nightmare!

I was thinking the opposite - the whole reason they were trucking the bees was to move them from place to place because the local populations were tainted with the Australian bees. So now these "protected bees" which were so necessary to the pollination efforts are out in the wild and will probably get tainted by interbreeding and have the same issues. It's sort of like the whole phylloxera issue with vines, where they now have to graft vines onto new bases because the phylloxera just got everywhere ...

I wonder how hard it is to get a new group of protected bees to replace those that they lost? And would they need to double the amount since the protected bees are now out in the wild and risk interbreeding?

Do you think sometimes that nature just needs to take its' own course and we should let it be (no pun intended)? Maybe we shouldn't interfere with nature.

however, we should be concerned with the bees since they are responsible for polinating our plants. Someone once said that when the bees are gone, the world will follow in 4 days. Bees polinate the plants we eat, our food eats. Without that food the animals die, then we do.

interesting theory

I wonder if the protected bees were somehow also protected from the colony collapse disorder that is killing millions of bees. You're right that we should be concerned about our bees.

Bees are also very sensitive to pesticides and chemicals in our environment and it's easy to kill them off. That's one reason organic farming methods are so important.
