A friend of mine decided to eliminate soda, refined sugars (including high fructose corn syrup) and processed foods from her diet as part of improve-your-health challenge at her workplace. Of course, she replaced these eliminated foods with healthier options. She didn't cut out all sweets from her diet but instead substituted pure maple syrup, agave nectar or brown rice syrup for sugar. Her goal was to strengthen her immune system and as a result, lessen her allergies and migraine headaches. She has been following the diet since December 1 and hasn't had a migraine headache since then. She has made it through the winter free of colds and flu. The next test will be to see how her allergies fair now that allergy season is here. Her success definitely points to the benefits of a healthy diet that mainly relies on whole foods, rich in the vitamins and minerals our bodies' need.
