Have you seen the latest feature article on the Canadian culture page? Is There Such a Thing as Canadian Food?

What do you think? Does Canada have its own culinary traditions?

What are your favourite Canadian foods?

When we would go to Cape Breton and Nova Scotia one of the dishes I looked forward to having was the french fries with cheese and gravy (yeah, I know - artery stopping!)

I can't remember the name of the dish (begins with a p) but I believe it is a French dish but not sure if "French Canadian" or just French.

I have never seen the dish in the US or in my trip to France so I am going with Canadian!

I do have so the best lobster (and I am from New England) are the ones you eat in Nova Scotia - yummy!

Oh, and Coffee Crisps - can't get them in the US!!!!

You're absolutely right, fries with cheese curds and gravy (called Poutine) is a French Canadian dish.

You can find out more about poutine here: An Ode to Poutine, CBC - A Taste of Canada our Homegrown cuisine.

Thanks for the shout out to our lobster - it really means something coming from a New Englander. And no coffee crisp? That's just shocking!

What an interesting topic. My ex is from Canada and he is the only one that left for US - back in late 70s at age 18. I would like to find out things about his background so that my son who is almost 13 knows about life in Canada, but the father left so long ago he is no help.

Any good ideas on where to start? Father was born in Montreal and has a brother and two sisters. I believe the sisters are on opposite coasts. They are all in their 50s now and have families, etc and never met any of them.

He wants to learn French someday too. He wants to work with animals like Jack Hanna so he would relate to animal sanctuaries, etc.

My plan for the site is to give readers a picture of what it's like to be a Canadian, living in Canada. But I'm just getting started, so I don't have much to offer you yet.

Here are some websites you can explore to learn more about Canada:

The CBC Canadian Culture Archives

Canadian Culture Online

Images Canada

I hope these help. If you have anymore questions, just let me know.

Canadian cuisine is hard to define, for sure. Many people in Germany often ask me about it. But there isn't much to say! I describe my favourites to them: poutine, tortire, maply syrup, maple walnut ice cream, beaver tails, corn on the cob in summer...

When I lived in England, there was a little Canadian shop near Covent Garden Market. In it I found, of all things, Kraft Dinner.

I live in the USA now & my husband laughs when I still call mac & cheese Kraft Dinner. lol.

The shop also had Shreddies cereal, Smarties (like m&ms) and a brand of root beer you can only get in Canada (I forget the name).

Other Canadian products? Tim Horton's coffee, Canadian bacon and maple syrup. We do have lumberjack roots!

I once ordered a Caesar in a US restaurant and was brought a salad. I really wanted a Clamato and vodka drink (like a bloody Mary, but with Clamato juice). I had not idea it was a Canadian thing.

These examples are not really fine cuisine, but they are interesting aspects of Canadian food pop culture. smile

Hi Candice,

I'm delighted to hear of a little Canadian shop near Covent Garden! I heard a few years ago that they don't have Smarties in the states - well, apparently they do, but they're some kind of licorice snack. I was surprised. Smarties were so much a part of my childhood - I even ate the red ones last.

Canadian Bacon isn't called that by Canadians, we call it peameal back bacon. But you're right about Tim Hortons - HUGE in Canada. And the Caesar is definitely Canadian. I'm always surprised by its popularity. I haven't tried it because Clamato juice kind of scares me.

Thanks for sharing your Canadian Food adventures!
