BellaOnline Forums Career Unemployment Teach English in another country for a year?

Hi all:

Has anyone heard of those programs where countries in Asia pay English speaking people to come to their country and teach English in schools for a year? Has anyone ever done this? Is it safe, fun etc etc? There are so many companies that do this - which is the best?

I've recently seen some websites for teaching English in Korea. Anybody have any experience with this or know somebody who has?

A good girl friend of mine did a program like this in Japan right out of college. She taught there for a year and really enjoyed it! I think if you find the right program, it can be a great experience.

Hi Malika,

I know a few people who have taught English overseas. I really don't know enough about it to recommend a specific company. Based on everything I've heard, the most important thing that determines whether you have a good experience and whether you're paid a good wage is the school you go with.

My understanding is that there is a huge difference (in terms of working conditions) in the different schools you could work with overseas. So it's really crucial to do what you're doing here; that is network to find people who have worked overseas and get recomendations regarding which companies are the best to work for and which ones are best avoided.
