I have a template for a quilt block that is supposed to be cut apart to make individual templates for the pieces. My question is can I just use the whole template as a paper piecing guide?

Hi Kevda, thanks for your email. It's always great to hear from new posters. I am sure you can use the whole template as a paper piecing guide, just photocopy it once to keep a good copy of the pattern.

Good idea, Judie. I have destroyed so many paper templates or patterns over the years by not keeping a master copy.

Re paper piecing I haven't any done any and was wondering do you cut out the shapes beforehand adding 1/4"to each side of the piece or do you just lay a piece of material onto the paper approximately the same size . To me you would have nore waste this way . Sorry if this has been answered before but have just decided to try this method after years of joining pieces in the usual way

Also have seen rulers that just add 1/8" do you need these at all?
Thanks and good wishes from England

I/ve tried paper piecing just using scraps and found it a little hard with odd shaped pieces to get all the seams sewn properly. On this quilt I measured the height and length of the longest let of the triangles and added 1/4" around (roughly 3 1/2 x 2 1/2?, can't remember the height as I did it 2 days ago, that's why I took notes while I was trying to figure it out)then cut strips then cut rectangles using those measurements. Haven't gotten too far yet because I realized I hadn't bought enough fabric for the main color of my square. I'm hoping this works because this is only the 2nd paper piecing work I have done.

I/ don't know too much about rulers I only have straight and various square ones.

Hope this helps
