Why are the commercial cat posts so expensive yet so flimsy. They look like they'd fall over if you blew on them let alone having a cat making a running dash up one.

We have an old post that needs to be retired but I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement that won't fall over or fall to bits. anyone see any?

We've given up on the commercial posts, Moe, and are looking into building our own. I'll let you know how it goes.

Meanwhile, my cat enjoys scratching at the back of one of those $4 kitchen rugs (cats seem to love rug backing). We have to buy her a new one 2 or 3 times a year, but it keeps her from tearing up things she's not supposed to and she's very attached to them. We get a "greeting scratch" when we come home in the evenings and she throws a royal fit if her rug is relocated. We're thinking of using one of those rugs on her scratching post instead of carpeting.

My two decided that they love the floor mats that came with my car, a Ford Focus. So I took the mats out of the car and have them pinned down by table legs where the cats can scratch all they like. One of them has begun to use the front door mat that has a similar plushy texture, too. They never liked the scratch post, but used to play on it when they were kittens. I finally got rid of it.
They also like a certain big round toy that has a channel with a ball around the edge and a cardboard mat in the middle. The ball is fun and the mat gets used a lot, it gets shredded in time and you can buy replacements.

I know someone who's made his own cat condo, I might be able to wheedle the blueprints out of him. It looks fantastic!

I'll try to take a picture of mine soon, it's by the sliding glass window and the cats LOVE it. It's pretty sturdy too. I think we got it at PetSmart.
