Permission to be Creative

This is our thread to fight the gremlins that stop us from being creative! Are you in? If so, and you want, just sign your name and state that you will be creative, no matter what. I'll start!

I don't like gremlins, and they will no longer stop me from being creative. I have signed my permission slip and I want to state here that I will be creative and not worry about what others say.

Chel!
What a great article!

I've been fighting the grumbling mind gremlins my entire life, I just didn't have a name for them. And as a former art teacher I have been fighting them in my students as well. If you watch young children draw or paint the creativity bubbles from them. But somewhere around the age of 9 kids get the message that "I'm no artiste" and they stop being creative. I use that quote because I heard it soooo many times from my middle school students. Where did they get that message?

I know my 4 children didn't get it because all 4 of them create in their own way, all 4 are very accomplished with paper and color. But it never occurred to them that they couldn't....Mom does it.

I think parents are so worried about raising "responsible" citizens who can earn a living, that they don't realize creativity is a big part of it. They view art class as "sandbox" that doesn't count for anything. What is the first thing that gets the ax when school budgets get cut? The arts! Now I'm all for my children earning a living, but there has to be more to life and learning than just dollars and cents.

Thanks for the opportunity to let me vent on this topic, it's been vitally important to me for a very long time.

I think everyone is creative. My MIL is constantly telling me how creative I am and how she admires that and belittling herself by saying she's not creative. I am constantly telling her "See that was creative" but she totally disregards that. Any other ideas for showing others that they are indeed creative?

I applaud creativity! Everyone has it - not all use it. I put off my creativity for years because I was always receiving well meaning advice from people close to me that just prevented me from experimenting and trying. I now encourage my grandson to be aware of his inner wishes and desires and creativity and he is a very creative child.
