My mom got this tradition from my grandmother, who came from Russia - before covering our eyes while reciting the prayer, she waves her hands over the candles twice and says two Yiddish words - does anyone else know about this?

I am not familiar with the Yiddush words. I did a little research but didn't find much (yet). Were the words Bentshen lecht? (which means "lighting the candles" in Yiddush.

The other thought I had was "shamor v'zakor" (except these are Hebrew words) which mean to keep and to remember - one of the reasons we light two candles on Shabbat.

In my family, we circle three times - bringing the peace of Shabbat in.

I don't think I can spell these words correctly - I will phonetically spell them:

"Bud-ave-he, Bud-ave-shve."

My mom says this while circling the candles, before covering her eyes. As I mentioned, this came from my grandmother who was Russian and spoke Yiddish.
