I love Amaryllis and have a 3 year old bulb just now putting up a flower bud. (and 2 baby bulbs!) The bud comes first, then the leaves. If you put it in the sun, feed it and water it until the leaves die down in the fall, then it will go dormant for a couple of months and bloom again next year.
The one in the photo was a big healthy bulb to have 2 flower stalks and it really needs to be potted up into a bigger flowerpot with drainage and some good potting soil if you want to keep it going. There's not enough there to nourish it when the leaves appear.
