I wrote about sugar alternatives on my diabetes blog. It seems Stevia is the very best alternative right now. No harmful effects, though readers have told me it takes some getting used to using and tasting it. Much sweeter than sugar.

I totally agree about Stevia, Julie. I've been using it for about 5 years. My husband, who is pre-disposed to high blood sugar also uses it. I even carry some in my purse for when we drink iced tea in restaurants.

Agave nectar is another good one as it is low on the glycemic index. I use that for cooking lots of times. When I make baked pears or apples, for instance, I put cinnamon and agave nectar over it and it tastes like it was done in brown sugar.
