If a person wanted to copy a program from a computer and the program is bigger than the usual 700 MB's that are usually free on a typical CD-R, could a person use a DVD-R instead? DVD-R or RW's are usually several GB's whereas CD-R's are MB's.

Yes you can. Does the copyright allow you to do this?

Right a CD or DVD is just a transfer medium, it's just something you stick bits onto. You can put your files onto floppy disc, USB drive, you name it if your intention is to back up the file for use later on. You then restore it off that backup media as needed.

But fritsau is right, make sure you are doing something legal here. It's not worth the high fees if you are illegally copying software.
