Nicola,

I haven't heard about rose roots damaging a house. I know wisteria or a tree can cause damage.

You could alway try putting the rose into a very large barrel size pot. The pot would need to be very large and then place the pot next to the house or a railing for the rose to grow up. Just select a smaller size climbing rose, not more than about 8 feet or so, and keep the pot well watered.

Nicola,

I was thinking and there are lots of other places you could put a climbing rose. If your husband is nervous about plants next to the house, how about planting a smaller size climbing rose aganist a deck or fence? This would give the rose something to climb on while keeping it away from the house. If you don't have a deck or fence you could build a pergola over a patio or make an arbor over a walkway to add a rose to. Just make sure it's in a sunny spot. Roses like at least 6-8 hours a day.

Nicola, that sounds so beautiful. Can you post a picture when the pergola is finished? I would love to see it.

That sounds great. I had a pergola at my last house. It had Confederate Jasmine and Autumn Clematis on it. If you get a vigorous climbing rose it could be really be pretty. One with fragrance would be wonderful for late spring parties.

I LOVE Clematis. Especially Gillian Blades with its 5'' white flowers and Hagley Hibred with its candy pink ones. The Tanguticas are lovely too, with their bell shaped flowers, and there is one like apple blossom, with white and speckled pink dots, its beautiful. I will definatly have loads of them!

And I will definatly have fragrant roses, charity. I love the smell. Night stock and mignonette are wonderful for that, so is cherry pie.

Nicola,

Thanks for the tips. I haven't grown any clematis except Autumn clematis and I'm looking to purchase some different ones. My mother has all different ones.

The roses you listed sound lovely too. I still haven't done any spring ordering yet, so will look into those.

I'm looking for an Old World or antique rose to grow up the side of my garage. I live in zone 7b/8a. Does anyone have any favorites?

I love David Austin Roses as far as antique roses. They have so much more aroma than hybrids. My mom grows several David Austin roses and they're beautiful.
