In an interview with the Times in the UK yesterday, author JG Ballard revealed he's finally written his autobiography. Sadly he also revealed that what led him to finally write this is fact that he's been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

I'm sooooo sad! Ballad has been my favorite sf author since I was a teenager. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with his work, his book Empire of the Sun was made into a movie by Steven Speilberg and introduced us all to a pre-teen Christian Bale. His novel Crash was adapted and filmed by David Cronenberg.

How sad. It seems like there's been a lot of bad news in SF/Fantasy lately.

But I also remember being in high school, and my parents being the age I am now, and talking about actors/writers/musicians that they were fans of passing, and I realize that from this point on (I'm 40 now) that's a part of the natural flow of life.

The part that makes me really sad is that my best friend from high school, the one who "got into" Ballard's fiction with me, isn't as internet-centric as I am, and I'm going to be the one who breaks this news to her. Ouch...
