Fabulous ideas here. All I can add are some more movies you could review from the perspective of parent-son roles:
Billy Elliot
Romulus, my Father (Acclaimed Australian movie starring Eric Bana (Hulk), based on a true story of a father/son relationship)
Like Father, Like Son (2-part mini series out on DVD, starring Robson Green (Wire in the Blood). In this one the father is a convicted serial killer - then a student at the boy's school is murdered and certain assumptions are made, but I think it is more complex than it seems (I haven't seen it yet).
Shine - looking at the relationship between child prodigy David Helfgott and his father who wants him to succeed but pushes him too hard.
About a Boy
Love, Actually - I haven't seen this either, but I caught a gorgeous scene between Liam Neeson's character (a widower, I think?) and his character's son. He is worried that the boy is acting strangely and thinks he may be experimenting with drugs. The boy sheepishly informs Neeson that he is in love.
