Hi Ladies!

I was wondering what martial art you consider to be the best one for women. I have been fascianted with the martial arts ever since I caught a Bruce Lee movie on late night televsion when I was 12 years old. I would sneak out of bed and down the hall past my slumbering parents bedroom to be able to watch all those fabulous choreographed fight scenes on Kung Fu Theater. smile It wa so graceful and powerful I'm 37 now, so I guess better late than never, eh? (laughs) I am interested in finding something that uses your oponent's momentum and strength in your favor. I am thinking about Aikido? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions you could give me? I am 5' 6" and about 130 lbs. I have am athletic, medium build. Thanks in advance for any tips!

There are so many different kinds of martial arts, it's hard to pin-point which would be perfect for you. Do you like contact-type martial arts? If you have numerous injuries would you prefer a gentler kind?

Aikido does use the concept you mention so if that's what you are seeking, I'd try that.

I've seen people who train in Tai Chi spar and that is also an excellent martial art that uses energy against your opponent.

Good luck!

Hi Thisdesertrose,

Hope I'm not too late in responding. Been away from the topic for a bit now and just now returning. My apologies to my readers. You should start to see new topics and articles coming up soon.

As for your question here, pretty much all Martial Arts should use the opponent's momentum and strength in your favor. If you aren't you're just muscling things. In fact, if you study body mechanics, any and all physical activities work better if you work with your momentum and strengths and not against them.

Amethyst22 did a great job answering. I personally study Tai Chi and have done Tai Chi sparring (though I honestly don't do a lot of combat) and it is a lot of fun. I've also seen Aikido practioners and they are great to watch.

The key is really to pick something that appeals to you. I would go and watch a class or watch a demo to see if what they are doing is interesting. There are a few articles up already from the past in the Finding a School that might help. Also, my section about What is? goes through a bit more specifics about various arts and how they differ.

If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to ask.
