Does anyone have any stories/info about experiences with Borderline Personality - yourself or another?
I find this topic not too easy to get a lot of good info on.
Thanks

Borderline Personality Disorder;
A form of personality organization falling between neurotic and more primitive psychotic levels.
Someone with a borderline personality disorder is usually incapable of maintaining stable relationships; mood changes are often rapid and inappropriate.
Frequent, angry outbursts are common, as are impulsive, self- damaging acts such as gambling, shoplifting,or suicide attempts.

Thanks Lisa, interesting article. I didn't know that it was considered more a female situation.
I have had post traumatic stress issues, and the antidepressants I have been on for all of these years have been a life saver. I was wondering if I fell into this catagory before I began medicine.
I hope you sister can find some adequate treatment. Good luck.

Just did an assignment on BORDERLINE P.D. and there's a lot of information out there. 2 Brilliant books that brought me up to scratch as a non-academic were:
I HATE YOU - DON'T LEAVE ME Hal Strydom/J. Kagan ?
SOMETIMES I ACT CRAZY. Hal Strydom/Dr. J.Kagan
BOth can be viewed on AMazon, but I would have to say the latest one in more accurate and up to date, RE; Treatments, outcomes etc.
Also somewhere out there is a website that deals only with this subject... Don't have the address off hand but I think it's something like borderlinepd.com

I am by no means a licensed mental health professional but I did work for a mental health insurance company, I spent my days speaking to patients and getting them appointments to see the doctors they needed.

In all that time, I only ever spoke with ONE MAN who claimed to be diagnosed boarderline personality disorder. AND keep in mind I was only going on his word that his primary care physician told him that and a PCP isn't really qualified to make that diagnoses. The other patients were all women, had all been diagnoses by a psychiatrist on an outpatient basis or inpatient because they threatened to kill themselves as they are SO fond of doing.

As for my sister, I don't care what she does as long as she does it far away from me. The last stunt she pulled has posibly given me enough ammunition to get a restraining order and I intend to do just that once I have all the paperwork. My first proirity is to my daughter and my sister has become fixated on her and the fact that I was able to have children and she was not.

I think that you all have some great information you've shared here and so I will extricate from my memories experiences I've had with patients with this disorder. Yes, usually we think of women as having BPD, but there are many men who fit into this classification as well. Those with this personality disorder are first and foremost attention seekers. I want what I want now and if I don't get it I'm going to DO something to get your attention. Faking seizures, head banging (that's always a shocker), pulling lightbulbs out of ceilings and breaking them to cut themselves, barracading doors, threatening to hurt others and then hurting themselves. I'll say 90% of the time one with BPD is a chronic inflicter of self harm. Cutting is primary because it does not often render serious damage but looks scary and draws a lot of attention. In those who have committed suicide in this way, it is often accidental - they went overboard. This disorder requires lots of patience, limit setting to control manipulative behaviours and hours in DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) or CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) - and of course someone who is willing to put forth the effort to curb these behaviours.

I think because I have had to deal with my sister (MUCH older adopted sister), I have NO patience or tolerance for this kind of thing. I feel like we are both in the water struggling to NOT drown and she is trying to pull me under.
I don't know how you as a therapist deal with them but I thank god someone out there has a calling to help them. I just know it can't be me.
