My daughter's name is Rebecca and I guess the name fits because she is the cutest thing. Am I biased? lol.

I named her for Rebecca in the bible and wanted to spell it the biblical way and I don't remember what happened and why it is spelled commonly. I think it was a miscommunication.

Oh well...

I love the name Rebecca. Spelling it the more common way will probably make it easier on her in the futre. Everyone won't be misspelling it. smile

I read your article on baby names, Lynne and told my daughter that it meant captivating beauty but she told me that someone at church told her it meant light, like a shining light.

Which brings me to a question:

I have seen different books that had different meanings for different names so where do they come up with the different meanings and who do we believe?

Is it possible for you to do an article on this sometime? Is it even possible to research something like that for an article?

The name meanings usually come from their counterparts in Greek or Hebrew. They are often parts of Hebrew or Greek words or words that sound like those words. So, it often depends on the translator and their perception of the meaning.

PS - By the way, this is different than the translations of the actual Bible text. In that the translators have actual words and context to go on.

Oh ok. Thank you. That I can understand. I was wondering how they came up with different meanings.
