Here is a very simple but profound guideline to practice Meditation.
You have to study it carefully. Practice as instructed. Once you start practicing, these things become very simple and it becomes as easy as you walk or talk effortlessly. It is because Meditation is our original state as sleep is.
Study it. Practice Meditation.
M E D I T A T I O N
Select any convenient time in your daily schedule.
The time for Meditation should be relaxed.
It should not have very rigid schedule.
Keep one hour in your day for practice of Meditation.
Select a comfortable place which you feel more comfortable.
Keep 30 minutes for Meditation on the first day.
Posture:
Meditation has to be practiced with sitting posture with closed eyes.
You can either sit on a chair with crossed legs or on a mat in Sukhasana.
You can lean on a wall or cushion on the back for support and comfort.
The sitting posture should be stable and comfortable for you to sit for Meditation.
Way to do Meditation:
After sitting in a comfortable posture:
Clasp your fingers and cross your legs
Close your eyes gently.
Relax...
Take 5-6 deep breaths...
Take in-breath ...hold for few seconds release out-breath slowly.
Relax...
Stop doing breathing. Relax...
Now just witness the breath...
Watch Breath within the nostrils...
Breath is happening on its own way.
Just witness the flow of Breath.
In-breath....out-breath...
Just be with the Breath...
Let the breath be on its own...
Just witness...
Thoughts may come in between.
Just witness the breath...
Thought slowly disappear on its own...
Just witness...
Allow it to flow..either thoughts...or Breath...
Just witness the breath...or thought...
Thought slowly disappear on its own...breath also slows down...
Be with the breath...just witness...
Just be

Close your session when you feel completely relaxed...fresh...bliss...
Slowly open your eyes.
Come out of the session.

Thank you for sharing this. Just one note to anyone who reads this:

If sitting cross-legged, or even sitting at all, is too uncomfortable or even painful, you can also use a reclining position. A word of warning, however, is that it's usually best to do your reclining meditation somewhere other than your bed or any other place which your mind may associate with sleep or even napping.

Guided meditations, ones learned or ones we listen to from a recording or a friend reading it to us, can be a deeply inspirational way to begin exploring your own psyche, or, when they add a visualized sacred space or journey to the script, as a way to begin experiencing your own inner-worlds.

Moerdryn, it is so true that reclining meditations should be away from your bed. And, I too find some guided listening meditations very inspiring.

I am reading a book called "Meditation - Now or Never" by steve Hagen. He also wrote "Buddhism Plain and Simple". Both are really good books.

I started doing meditation from a yoga video with Rodney Yee. He incorporated a relaxing meditation at the beginning and end.

I think sometimes people expect meditation to be something very different from just resting your mind, kind of non-thinking, which is what it really is. People tend to make it seem more difficult that it truly is. Steve Hagen's book explains it very well.

I like this meditation that we did when I was a child in school altho it was not called a meditation and it is easy!

first you lay down or sit comfortably anywhere as long as your not driving! lol

then close your eyes and picture someplace you would like to go like a forest, meadow, beach or another planet!!!!

now see it as a picture on the wall of your eyeleads!
feel your self float into the picture so that you are inside the picture. feel what it feels like to be in the picture then slowly make the picture come to life hear the sounds of the beaches, foreast, meadow, or planet. breath the air and relax as your imagination takes over.

when your ready revease these steps and open your eyes.

I use to love this!!! and now I can add music and feel the music and float away into the land of music and song .

Imagination time or quite time... if they had called in meditation the parents would have fliped out because that is "opening doors the devil can walk through" and "leading the children away from God" so....they called a rose and flower and made everyone happy!!! lol
