I used Yahoo several years ago for a high stress job situation and it got so I would tense up any time I saw a message coming in. I finally quit that job and was SO happy to shut that all down.

I now use AIM for only a specific few people for emergency contact, and I do like having that in place. It is good in that situation so they can get me immediately, but having those "immediate interruptions" are as bad as phone calls in general for me. I would much rather get an email message that is nonintrusive and I can get when I am ready to. Often I am deep in a coding project and if I'm interrupted it can take me a while to get back to what I was doing.
