Here's how to play:
1. Go to the last post in this thread
2. From the lists you find there, pick your least favorite male name and your least favorite female name.
3. In your response, tell us what the two names are, the reason(s) you dislike them, and then re-post the lists with those two names omitted.

The two non-eliminated names left standing at the end will be declared the winners!

To start us off, here are 20 male and 20 female names. (They were plucked from a list of Newbery Medal winners.)

FEMALE NAMES
Beverly, Cornelia, Cynthia, Elizabeth, Ellen, Emily, Irene, Joan, Karen, Katherine, Lois, Lynne, Madeleine, Marguerite, Monica, Patricia, Paula, Rachel, Susan, Virginia

MALE NAMES
Armstrong, Arthur, Charles, Christopher, Eric, Harold, Hendrik, Hugh, James, Jerry, Joseph, Lloyd, Louis, Paul, Richard, Robert, Russell, Scott, Walter, William

I'll go first to demonstrate how the game works...

I'm eliminating:

Lois - Because it will never not remind me of Superman. smile

I'm eliminating Cornelia because I've never liked the sound of it (and it is my grandmother's and my aunt's name - they've always both been Nellie, which sounds so dated).

And Lloyd, because it's "naff" as the Brits would say (apologies to any Lloyds)

Beverly, Cynthia, Elizabeth, Ellen, Emily, Irene, Joan, Karen, Katherine, Lynne, Madeleine, Marguerite, Monica, Patricia, Paula, Rachel, Virginia

MALE NAMES

Sorry but Virginia and Harold. Virginia reminds me of a cigarette and Harold, the only ones I know have an animal name for their last name. Not Harry Dog, but close enough. Can you imagine?

Female Names: Beverly, Cynthia, Elizabeth, Ellen, Emily, Irene, Joan, Karen, Katherine, Lynne, Madeleine, Marguerite, Monica, Patricia, Paula, Rachel

Male Names: Armstrong, Arthur, Charles, Eric, Hugh, James, Jerry, Joseph, Louis, Paul, Richard, Robert, Russell, Scott, Walter, William

I'll have to eliminate Beverly and Arthur. I chose Beverly because it is my bio-grandmother's name and she named me after herself right before she made my biological mother give me up for adoption. It's always reminded me of a selfish mean person. And Arthur for a much simpler reason...I just don't care for the shortened name of Art.

Female Names: Cynthia, Elizabeth, Ellen, Emily, Irene, Joan, Karen, Katherine, Lynne, Madeleine, Marguerite, Monica, Patricia, Paula, Rachel

Male Names: Armstrong, Charles, Eric, Hugh, James, Jerry, Joseph, Louis, Paul, Richard, Robert, Russell, Scott, Walter, William

I'm eliminating Marguerite because it seems too posh for my tastes! And, for the guys, I'm eliminating Armstrong because the school-age nickname possibilities are just too great!

For male names I'll eliminate Jerry, because I tend to think of it more as a nickname (for Jeremiah, Jerome, Gerald, etc.), and for female names I'll do away with Emily, because it's just soooo popular right now. smile

Female Names: Cynthia, Elizabeth, Ellen, Irene, Joan, Karen, Katherine, Lynne, Madeleine, Monica, Patricia, Paula, Rachel

Male Names: Charles, Eric, Hugh, James, Joseph, Louis, Paul, Richard, Robert, Russell, Scott, Walter, William
