We can't turn back time, so I guess we just have to think in terms of "I'm only as old as I feel and I feel..." Hm...I used to say 18. Today...30. I guess I feel 30 today. Not bad for someone who is getting way too close to double nickels.

When I called my brother 10 days ago to wish him a happy birthday, he said, "You're coming up to double nickels, aren't you?" Um. First of all, no, I am not. Secondly, I never heard that term, though I admit I do think it's on the amusing side.

"Remember when Deb (his wife) used to say, 'Ha! Cathy, I'm older than you'?" Back then I used to say, "Age is not a sign of intelligence." And then one day I said, "And someday you're gonna wish that wasn't so." And we are there. Yep. Deb is older than me. LOL.

What was your favorite birthday year and why?

Hope to hear from y'all!

I did the RealAge test and found out my "real age" is about 15 years younger than my chronological age because of good health habits, exercise, etc.

I don't think about age (altho the bit 6-0 is looming in a couple years). The most important thing to me is to grow older in good health and with my mental faculties in tact.

My mom always says growing older sure beats the alternative!

LOL. I keep telling my mother that aging beats the alternative. She keeps saying there's nothing golden about the golden years. She has Alzheimer's. In fact, we're going to a meeting with reps from Case Western Reserve and University of Pittsburgh Memory/Alzheimer's centers this week that will discuss clinical trials for two AD meds that are getting rave reviews. Mom wants to participate in the trials. What a fantastic thing that would be if she got back what she's lost!

Hm. RealAge test...where would I find that?

Ah, I went looking and found it. Not only did I test for what I actually am, I took the test for the ideal of what I can be if I apply myself to taking better care of me. Thanks for the idea!

It's a great website! You can check and see how well you're doing with all aspects of your health.

Do you take tumeric? This supplement is supposed to keep a person from getting Alzheimers. I take it for osteoarthritis as it's an anti-inflammatory also. There was a recent study on this I just saw on TV last night but I've been taking it for a couple years.

I'm so sorry about your mom. My parents are in their 80's and it's sad to see them fading and less able to get around-altho by many standards they are very healthy. They take no drugs of any kind and have no major problems-just "old age".

I hope by taking care of myself with exercise, supplements and eating right that I'll avoid much of the "age-related" diseases out there.

Hi, Joan. I was just reading about turmeric. The University of Pittsburgh's Alzheimer's Research Center is doing a clinical trial on Omega 3, too. There's something about fish/fish oil. I think I'll check into the turmeric, though. In talking to my mother, it seems that "forgetfulness" runs in the women in Mom's maternal side of the family. I am concerned that I have a 50/50 chance of AD diagnosis in my 70s.

Cathy, here are two article that will help you. One is about a study of turmeric and alzheimers and the other is Andrew Weils recommendations for an "anti-alzheimers" diet-which is mostly the Mediterranean diet.

Thanks! I'll check these items out. Seems like there was a lot of discussion around me over the weekend about turmeric...yeah, some generated by me, but everyone is interested in the subject.

It's a great anti-inflammatory which helps with all those arthritic aches and pains when you get older! That's the original reason I started taking it.

Andrew Weil suggests a whole turmeric like TurmericForce, which is the one I take.

Isn't it fun growing old together? You go first.
