Michael J. over at Yelp.com has done some background research on the licensing and has found that Sony's rights to Godzilla expired in 2003 and were not renewed. Toho, the Japanese company that currently owns the creative rights to Godzilla has sworn that they would never allow another U.S. production company to shoot a Godzilla film after the 1998 abomination. However, I tend to agree with Mike J. that all this could just be a big smokescreen and that Paramount could have secretly acquired the rights. Although Toho stated that they "may" retire Godzilla until 2014 (his 60th anniversary) it doesn't mean that they didn't change their minds about allowing an American version to be produced in the mean time. Sidenote: The Wii is set to release Godzilla Unleased this Fall.
As of 2005 the rights to "Voltron" are actually owned by New Line Cinema. Justin Marks is the writer and is also writing for the upcoming "Master of the Universe" film set for release in 2009. Mark Gordon is the producer for Voltron as well the upcoming "10,000 BC" flick (2008).
Of course this could just be a brand new monster flick from Bad Robot. J.J. sent word to Aint It Cool NewsBellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. Please use UBB code. If you don't know how to do UBB code just post here for help - we will help out!
