Jan,
Family abductions or kidnapping by a family member (not necessarily a parent)happens much more frequently than stranger abductions as in the Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby cases. Most children who are abducted or abused know their attacker.
2,000 children are reported missing EVERYDAY, or 800,000 children per year, although 99% of those children are found safely by law enforcement...according to the FBI's statistics.
In reality, only @ 250 children/year are actually kidnapped for any length of time as in the Ben and Shawn case....still every case is frightening. 3-4000 children/ year disappear long enough to be sexually assaulted, etc...
