The ginghko is a nut from a specific tree of the same name.
it's also called the maidenhair tree, because the leaves look like the ones on the fronds of a maidenhair fern...
The tree can be either male or female. the felmale tree can decide whether the ginghko nuts she produces will in their turn be male or female, by the amount of pollen in the area. if there is an overload of pollen, it will mean there are many male trees, so she will predominantly produce female-resulting nuts....
The nuts in their raw sate are very bitter,a nd used mainly in Japanese cookery.
The tree itself is actually amember of the conifer family - a deciduous pine tree, the leaves turning yellow in the autumn, and dropping. It is the oldest speciment of tree on the planet, and it is unchanged from pre-historic times. Fossilised leaves have been found, dating from 250 million years ago.
It is also less commonly known as the Hiroshima tree, because it was the first tree to sprout shoots from the buried roots, after the bomb hit the city.....

This is my very favouritest tree or plant ever, and i am very enthusiastic about it. I own seven, of slightly different varieties...
here's a good wikipedia link.

yes, I believe it does, but if you look at the bottom of the wikipedia information page, it gives you possible side effects too. Some may criticise Wikipeidia, and may have good reason, but this page seems very well informed and well written as well.
