I am taking a class on mindfulness meditation which involves doing a body scan each day for about 45 minutes. I have a CD that I am supposed to listen to and follow the instructions. The problem is, I always fall asleep!

Am I getting anything out of this experience when I fall asleep? Should I try to do it sitting up instead? (The CD says to lie down, but you can do whatever you're comfortable with.)

I will ask this question at my next class, but I was wondering what you all think. Has anyone else had the experience of falling asleep when meditating? (I'm not even sure at this point if the body scan is considered meditating, or if it's just a way to start training my mind to focus on my body and breathing.)

I'd appreciate any input!

I see you've been given options - choose the position where you do not fall asleep or change the time of the day to use it when you are not likely to fall asleep.

I meditate in the morning when I first get up as my mind is still half in the alpha state but I'm still awake enough not to fall back to sleep.

HOW you meditate doesn't matter as much as finding something that works for you and sticking to it.

Thank you for your replies. I have tried meditating at different times of the day, but still had the falling asleep problem. Yesterday I tried doing it in a chair. I caught my head falling more than a few times, but overall I was alert for a longer period of time. This body scan is only one aspect of the class, and I think when the class is over I will probably abandon it in favor of a sitting meditation where I focus on my breathing instead of parts of my body, which I find very boring and I think is why I fall asleep.

Even after a week and a half I feel I am more alert and focused at work. I know the practice is beneficial and I hope it will get better for me in time.
