Hope, (I'm not picking an argument here - that wouldn't be very Buddhist - !!
)
What 'Principles' of Buddhism don't you believe in?
I merely ask, because the word 'belief' in Buddhism is a tricky thing.
By virtue of the fact that the Buddha himself encouraged "Ehi Passeiko!" - Come and see (or test) for yourself - he was encouraging his followers to never just 'believe' anything, but to examine it and really really scrutinise everything before saying "I know" or "I don't know."
With reference to a discussion I was having about re-birth, I wanted to add that this is a shaded and cloudy area for many, Buddhists in particular. Because the simple facts are, that concretely, whilst there is much evidence of this phenomenon having been attested to, I personally have never been able to verify it for myself. So rather than say I believe it, or I don't believe it, I'm more inclined to say, "I don't know." But it sounds logical to me, so I'm open to it being that way. If it isn't, I personally don't feel I will have lost anything, because I'm devoting all my time to improving my practise, whilst I'm alive.
Put it this way. If there's a good thing going on in the afterlife, I'm convinced that anyone good will have a share, regardless of what religious or spiritual persuasion they come from. If there isn't, my life will not have been a waste of time.
If I can put one genuine smile, on one face, and help someone feel good about themselves, then my life will not have been futile. Because ultimately, as far as I am concerned, that's really what life is about. Being happy, and making others happy.
Tear everything else away, and we find that this is the main fundamental basic Principle of Buddhism.
What could be more perfect?
EDIT NOTE: Corrected "gollowers" to "followers"....But I like 'gollowers', though!!
