Unfortunately this week my little baby (Jack Russell dog) was diagnosed with kidney disease. Although she was not eating any of the food on the pet recall list, somehow she still got this awful disease.
Fortunately, it was caught in time to maintain her quality of life with a low protein diet. The vet suggested several low protein pre-made dog foods. However, both my fianc and I agreed that with all of the recent and seamlessly never ending pet food recalls, we should just make her homemade food. So I altered a recipe that I found that incorporates one of the main staples of Chinese food--Rice. The recipe is as follows:
2 cups of rice
1/4 lb of ground beef
1 egg
Cook the beef and rice separately. Hard boil the egg, chop it up and mix all three ingredients together. I quadrupled this recipe and put it in the refrigerator which should last for the next two weeks.
I also learned that when you start a dog on this diet, you should slowly wean him or her onto the food by first mixing it with their regular food. Then slowly give them just the beef and rice mixture. This helps their body adjust to the change.
If anyone has any additional all natural, low protein dog food recipes, please share them.
