I believe that this problem is not only in the USA. All the countries suffer from it. rather it is to the credit of the USA, that such news gets out. Many other nations would never allow that.

First, I'm not sure about the sourcce, but assuming it is accurate, I don't think it is becuase they are Americans either. It is becuase they are at war, and they are trained killers living in brutal circumstances.

Fighting in a war would bring out the worst in most of us... it does, it has. It is shameful that America as a country supports a war with no end, but a strong point made by cdmohatta that the reporters have exposed such a thing.

You think "all countries" have women in the army who are systematically raped by their colleagues?

I have never heard of this happening in the UK. Isolated cases, perhaps yes... And I used to live in Aldershot, a military town in the UK, and had many women friends who were in the army. Nobody ever mentioned this, although discussions about equality and treatment came up many times....
In the western world, this kind of thing is far more open to exposure than in other parts, due to freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, so I don't think it may be as rife as you believe...
perhaps "all countries" is a bit of a sweeping statement....

why? Yes, by all means, but, why? I would deplore the fact instead, that it was necessary for them to have to report this in the first place. it should not have happened....

That problem was for the Govt. If press can find and report, corrective actions can be taken. Not otherwise. Any dictator gags the press first.

I think rape is a worldwide issue and wearing a uniform does not shield you from the risk of it. No country is safe from the issue of rape.

This one starts with the racy title "THE BIG COVER UP 30 years of British army rape in Kenya"

A few comments that jumped out.."British troops tortured, raped, mululated, starved and executed hundreds of thousands, reminiscent of Nazi Germany" and "In the UK rape victims face hostility and character assassination, and less than 6% of reported rapes result in conviction."

http://www.globalwomenstrike.net/English2005/KenyaRapeLeaflet.htm

"Two soldiers from Prince Harry's Army regiment will today appear in court charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in a park."
http://www.netscape.com/viewstory/2006/10/05/two-soldiers-from-prince-harrys-army-regiment-charged-with-rape/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.telegraph.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fmain.jhtml%3Fxml%3D%2Fnews%2F2006%2F10%2F05%2Furape.xml&frame=true

But rape doesn't seem to stop with America and the UK...

"Four Iraqi soldiers have been accused of raping a 50-year-old Sunni woman and the attempted rape of her two daughters in the second allegation of sexual assault leveled against Iraqi forces this week, an official said Thursday."

Sometimes i think that men want a woman at any cost. They should better go for some sex toys and leave women alone.

u r right hisbrandy i dont think such cruelty will ever stop.
as cdm says why dont they just go for sex toys.
i support any govt who hangs these creeps.
be it animals or humanbeings no one has the right to torture.
this will never end but i wish it did.
i am out in the hk and frankly i feel so secure than i feel when in my own country India.
The women have to be careful when they get into the bus and while walking on busy streets or they would be "tickled" etc.
its horrific.
i think people who do these have some nerve problems.
i hear women saying that men in the 60s are more into this kinda "fondling".

Engee,

If those who have studied the reasons for rape are correct then a rapist wouldn't find satisfaction in a toy. For many it's about domination, humiliation and sometimes a vindictive attack on womanhood.

Rape isn't about the sex. it hardly ever is. it's about control, domination and humiliation.
Very often, the perpetrator has a psychological reason underpinning their behaviour, but this is no excuse, and should never be considered, or taken as one. It's just a way of explaining how their mind works.

Engee, Do you have any problem with India? Why are you talking so much negative about your birth country? What you say is a lie about India and will tarnish its image. Why do you speak lies about your motherland? I have visited India and stayed for long. Are you writing all this to make others feel good? What is your motive in spreading misinformation about India? India is a lovely country and women are totally safe in India. I am surprised with your attitude. Were you anytime mishandled in a bus? Why do you say all this? Will you respond?

I do not know why you are getting irritated. And as far as knowing is concerned no body knows anyone on this forum. For all you say, you may be a man. But I do not approve of anybody who calls her country names for no reason. I call that disloyalty to the motherland. That is my opinion.

All the men who are blamed for doing this in India are someone's husband, someone's father and someone's brother. To say that indian females are in danger is a shocking statement for me.

Whatever ails other countries ails India. Nothing more. And I agree with Lordsaveme. In the east generally no body will criticise his/her country in front of others. That is a big difference between east and west. One should understand the cultural difference.

While it's true there have been reports of rape out in the sandbox (and I was over there in 2003), it's only been a small percentage. Females are not over there in fear of being raped. I know I wasn't. I never had a fear of walking alone to the latrine or shower tent, yet when we arrived at Camp Arifjan, we had heard of a couple of incidents of women being attacked at the latrines. You just have to vigilant. I can guarantee you there is more to what is actually reported; if you are going to act like a victim, you will be a victim. Rape just doesn't happen in the theater, it happens stateside also.

Reports of rapes, particularly during war, are not uncommon. Who knows why someone who is relatively normal during times of peace snapswhen at war. I'm not making excuses for the offender. There is no doubt that punishment is due. I was, however, glad to read the reply from LilWolf who has served with the military. It brought some reality to the situation by reminding all of us that this does not happen to all of the women who are serving in the military in Iraq. I think it's important to keep the perspective that those who commit the crime are not in the majority. Reactions and inflammatory reports can actually make life more diffficult for female servicemembers. The military could be referred to as a reflection of the general population. Rapes happen everywhere. Those serving in the military are disciplined individuals (male and female) and on occassion, even in the military, some of the freaks slip into the system.
