Hello! I'm gathering information because I'd like to get some finches. Not for breeding but just for enjoying. I'd like to have a mixed flight and have been reading about which types mix well. My main question is where can I find birds to buy? Do I really have to resort to the pet shop or can I find knowledgeable breeders to sell me pet birds? I've never seen any ads in the local newspaper so I don't know where else to look. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you checked to see if there is a bird club in your area? Often bird club members breed their birds as well as being a wealth of information both about their particular species as well as the birds in general.

I have some bird clubs listed at http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/1165.asp - but there are hundreds more clubs. Perhaps you could contact the one listed that is closest to you & they might be able to point you in the right direction to find more. Parrot club members may know canary and finch people as well, so just because a club specializes in parrots is not a reason to not ask them for direction.

You're not apt to find someone who breeds all the birds that you are interested in close by & the other method of purchasing would be to find a breeder online who is willing to ship to you.
