I'm a novice quilter, this is 2nd project. I want to use bias for the edging but don't know how much fabric to buy. I plan to cut the strips 4" wide, then apply doubled. Finished size of quilt will be 81" X 96" (double size). How do I calculate the amount of fabric needed?
If you use every scrap of material from one square yard of fabric you can cut 9 strips, 4 inches wide that will all be different lengths since you're cutting on the diagonal. But theoretically you would have 304 inches minus all the seams.
To figure the number of inches of stripping you need add together the length and width twice each.
In your case it would be almost 1.5 yards of 36 inch wide fabric.
Susan, Thanks so much for this information. I'm doing a project for my grandson's school fundraiser so I need to be thrifty. Last year I made my first quilt and it brought in $350. That made me proud.
