The Hannah Mansion

At 3801 Madison Avenue, the nearly 150 year old Hannah Mansion now sits quietly amidst a highly-populated area of Indianapolis, Indiana; its dark history long forgotten by most who pass it by. However, trapped within these walls is a tale too frightening for many to envision....
What many did not know about Alexander Hannah, a well known figure in the Indianapolis community, was that his cellar doubled as a safe haven for runaway slaves bound for Canada; a stop on the Underground Railroad. Hannah risked his own life to help get others to freedom, however, this led to an unforeseeable tragedy that has affected its
occupants to this very day.

One night, as slaves slept down in the cellar, one of their lanterns was accidentally spilled to the floor, instantly spreading fire throughout the room. Many of them were actually able to get out with their lives, yet
several were killed by the blaze and by inhaling its smoke.

Since then, images of spectral slaves have been seen hiding in the cellar. People report being touched and having their hair pulled gently. Also, a ghostly older woman has been reportedly witnessed in and around an upstairs bedroom, and the ghost of Hannah himself has been seen all over the property, perhaps still holding onto feelings of responsibility for the slaves he once protected. Stories of the infamous house can be found in nearly a dozen books and several dozen internet sites.
