Hi,
I'm going to a food/wine buff's house for Christmas--what is a really good wine (that's not uber expensive) that I could bring? And what would be an appropriate small something food wise to go with it?

I'm partial to Chilean and Italian red wines, but they might be serving seafood (which would make a white wine better)--what do you think?

Since you are not sure what will be served for dinner; why not take a dessert wine? The Canadian ice wines (Vidal ice wine is one of my favorites by Magnotta - a pretty blue bottle and box.) are really lovely, as are the German ones. And a really simple vanilla crisp cookie (here's a recipe: Vanilla Bean Cookies or a macaroon would be really nice to go along with.

Oh, thank you so much! Are the wines you mentioned available in most spirits stores?

LOL !

Going to a wine afficionado's home armed with wine is a difficult situation. Do you have a local wine & spirits store where they have expert sales help? Forget your corner "liquor store" since they usually know nothing.

You could actually do better at Trader Joe's or Ralph's market, even though you may have a hard time finding a knowledgeable consultant in the supermarket.

I like Bella Harmony's idea of a "dessert wine" since your typical wine buff tends to spend a lot of time tasting the Cabernet Sauvingons [red] that have a long shelf life. He/she probably already has something picked out that pairs nicely with the main course.

Dessert wines include sherries, ports, "eissveins" (ice wines)
and "late harvest" wines which are sweet and concentrated. I like a late harvest Orange Muscat which is produced locally here in southern california.

If they like liqueurs [which are distilled, concentrated, flavored & sweetemed spirits], you might go with a nice cordial like Chambord [raspberry] or Sabra [chocolate & orange, from Israel, a fave of mine.]

It's somewhat common, but I happen to very much like Harvey's Bristol Cream, which is a "cream sherry".

All of these would make excellent dessert picks. Good luck and tell us how it went!

Thanks Mrphph, I really appreciate the added wine tips you gave there. I will see what I find at the local store and let you all know what I decided on and how it went over.
