LOL !
Going to a wine afficionado's home armed with wine is a difficult situation. Do you have a local wine & spirits store where they have expert sales help? Forget your corner "liquor store" since they usually know nothing.
You could actually do better at Trader Joe's or Ralph's market, even though you may have a hard time finding a knowledgeable consultant in the supermarket.
I like Bella Harmony's idea of a "dessert wine" since your typical wine buff tends to spend a lot of time tasting the Cabernet Sauvingons [red] that have a long shelf life. He/she probably already has something picked out that pairs nicely with the main course.
Dessert wines include sherries, ports, "eissveins" (ice wines)
and "late harvest" wines which are sweet and concentrated. I like a late harvest Orange Muscat which is produced locally here in southern california.
If they like liqueurs [which are distilled, concentrated, flavored & sweetemed spirits], you might go with a nice cordial like Chambord [raspberry] or Sabra [chocolate & orange, from Israel, a fave of mine.]
It's somewhat common, but I happen to very much like Harvey's Bristol Cream, which is a "cream sherry".
All of these would make excellent dessert picks. Good luck and tell us how it went!
