I have been wondering for a while if indoor birds can get woodticks,I've never seen any on my birds as I am careful,But my dog brings them in,they find my kids fast enough,so I was wondering if they would be able to get to the parrots.

Carol,

What type of indoor birds do you have?

I understand from my avian vet that most species of parrot do not get fleas or ticks BUT they do get mites. With so many species of birds available as indoor exotic pets, it would be best to consult an avian vet on the possibility for other species, I think.

Hope this helps some,

Prime Time Kitty

I've never heard of a bird having a woodtick Carol. I certainly hope they can't get them because I'd hate to have to start checking all my birds for woodticks every spring. I agree with Prime Time Kitty and maybe a quick call to the vet would clear this up.

Hi Checked with the vet, no worries on the ticks they won't bother the birds.
But for the rest of us pups yuk, keep plucking. . See you Sat.

Hey while we're talking about ticks and mites and things, what's up with that mite powder I see in some pet stores? I thought the consensus on that from a few years ago was that it was really bad for birds to just randomly spray them with the powder monthly or to hang the strips in their cages, since in essence it was a poison you were keeping actively in their environment ... any news on that?

I thought those mite sprays & strips had disappeared too Lisa, & I hadn't notice that they have returned. I know canary breeders often use mite powder under the nest liner as those little devils seem to magically appear when canaries breed. With luck, the manufacturers have now produced a product that is not dangerous as I see by doing a search that there are plenty of powders & sprays on the market. I don't plan on using them however & if by chance my birds do find some mites, I'll give them a drop of Ivermectin as my veterinarian advised. eek
