Ok, this is going to make me sound rather stupid.
I was babysitting this afternoon and I fell asleep on their couch (I was out last night and was just so tired).
Anyway, the 8 year old I was babysitting decided it would be fun to play hairdressers. She cut my hair and I didn't even notice until I woke up surrounded by hair! As I was lying on my side, the left side of my hair is still perfectly fine- long, about 5 inches past my shoulders. But the right side looks terrible. I'm going to attempt to explain it so that you can help me decide what to do. She cut the front bit of my hair, kind of into a fringe (but it's less than half an inch long and only on one side). The rest of my hair she's cut so that the longest part is just above my shoulders and the shortest is just above my ear. Part of the top and back of my head on the left side is practically bald, as is the front part around my ear. There are several tufts on the top of my head too, probably about an inch in length.
Is there anything that I can do to sort this out other than cut it?? Cos the majority of the back and the right side is still long.
And I'd probably have to shave my head to get it all to the same length.
Please please help

Maybe you could brush the long side over the short side and then place a barrette holding it to the back on the short (hidden) side, so you sort of have a right side pony tail? Do you know anyone who is a good amateur hair cutter? Professionals are usually trained to cut hair even (or in even layers), but many amateurs I know cut hair so that it falls nicely (more like making a dress by draping on a dress form rather than using a pattern.) The latter is often better for fixing this kind of "mistake" - as I know because my grandma had to fix my hair a couple of times after my sister stuck stuff in it!

Best of luck!

Julie

Go to an experienced professional and get advice on what to do. They can give you options and then can do something for you if it needs trimmed.

Not really true of any hairdressers I know. Myself included! They are trained to cut hair according to its 'fall' and according to the shape of the face and head. They also get lots of experience correcting disasters of all kinds.

Well I went to a hairdresser this morning and she managed to sort it out, although I don't like it and am tempted to just cut it all of anyway.
She cut it kind of asymmetrically, so that the right side is shaved and the longest part of the left side reaches just past my ear. With a very harsh fringe (less than half and inch long).
I can't stop crying. I want my long hair back, and it'll take ages to grow :[:[
I feel almost bald. Will the short side stick up loads when it grows back? I've never had my hair shorter than my shoulders before. How long will it take to grow to a decent length?

I sure hope the 8 year old had some kind of consequences for what she did to you! <img src="/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

The last time I recieved a haircut that was too short and I didn't like,(not as serious as yours) I used Nioxin 3 part system. It is made as a remedy for people who are losing their hair but it also makes your hair grow really fast. My hair was grown out before I knew it.

Yours will take longer. Hair grows about half and inch per month but sometimes faster when you are young (and with the Nioxin) so it will take a while.

If your hair is very coarse, it may stick out until it reaches enough length to start to bend (anywhere from half and inch to 1 1/2 inches)

thanks for the advice Lynne.
I'm pretty sure that she will have some sort of consequence for cutting my hair, not that it helps me that much.
My hair is, unfortunately, very thick and coarse. So that should make it look even worse when it starts to grow back in :[
And half an inch per month means that, even to reach my shoulders, it's going to take possibly a year :[
*sigh* i guess i'll have to get used to looking a mess for a while...

Hi lil tams!

I know this seems like a disaster to you, believe me I have had a similar circumstance. After a gastric bypass to lose weight my hair started thinning out, then my child's school had a horrible outbreak of lice, which my child was *lucky* enough to bring home to the rest of the family.

I am fanatical about lice, so I treated everyone in the family for lice including myself - but because of my weakened hair state, wound up losing ALL of my hair! Well not at one time, but I had huge completely bald spots, so instead of trying to camouflage(sp?) which I couldn't have done anyway, I just shaved my head to match.

I was horribly depressed to begin with, but I have always had fun with my hair, considering it another "accessory"- and doing wild things with it when the whim hit me. So I went to Glamour Shots and had some bald pictures made (including my avatar to the left).

It may seem hard, but try to think like this - hair is an accessory - have fun during this growing out stage; get some fun hats that you've always wanted. Barrettes, headbands, etc. if you can't wear hats to school. You never know, you might wind up setting some new trend! As long as you don't go around with an "oh no, I'm horrid" attitude, then people will think you did it on purpose.

It's all in the attitude!

You know, as a babysitter, I wouldn't like to have you around my house anyway if you fall asleep. What if the child decided to go play with matches or use the scissors in a power outlet?
You know how curious kids are...

As a babysitter, the last thing I would expect you to do is fall asleep. If you do, either you have to stay for the night or you get some strong coffee. But getting payed to just sleep instead of doing your job is not something I would like to see. So I guess this is a good lesson for you!

Sorry if I sound harsh, not my intention.

Yeah, I wasn't getting paid anyway.

I'm sure that wasn't your intention...

Even if you don't get payed for it, falling asleep while kids run around is a no-no. Not for your sake, but for that of the child.

Good for the child to do that! Paid or not when you work you should not sleep unless your job is to sleep!
