What is normal? For the past couple of months I have noticed my hair has thinned a lot. I've recently cut it..and layered it. When I shampoo I just see strands falling out. I don't think I'm losing more than 100 a day..but every time I just stand over the sink I see hairs fall out. I have re-growth, because I can see my blond roots. I've recently been under stress and lost a lot of weight. My diet was not the best for a couple of months. Will my hair come back to life? And the fact that I see re-growth, is that a good sign?

Anyone have any ideas how long this will last? I've increased my calories and vitamins.

If you lose more than 50 hairs a day with everyday shampooing, your body cannot replace them. - so 100 is too many. Stress and rapid weightloss are big contributers to hair loss. Regrowth is a good sign but it is likely that not all of your hair is growing in.

Improving you nutrition is a good thing and it will help. I suggest doing something more aggressive, such as using Nioxin 3 step system to stop hairloss and to encourage regrowth.

I just shook my head and 17 hairs fell in the sink. At other times..none or one or two. But I just washed my hair a few hours ago. I don't get any of this. I think that's why I'm so frustrated. I can live with thin hair, as long as I know it will grow back again.

I think your hair is falling out because you worry too much. I stop counting hairs whenever they fall in the sink, otherwise I would get very nervous.

Guess what? I give massages and reiki. More info here!

I know. But it's hard not to be obsessed about it. I have to try and not dwell on it.

Stormynight,

In addition to gaining weight, you need to make sure you are eating the right types of foods.

I'm sure you've noticed my avatar by now! <img src="/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

I had a gastric bypass to lose weight, and hair loss is a very common side affect because of the rapid weight loss, AND the fact that the weight loss is caused by not getting enough protein to begin with. (We are only left with a small stomach pouch - that is why in the beginning it is so impotant to drink protein shakes, because we just cannot EAT enough protein to digest). So you might think about whether your diet has enough protein in it. Also enough iron, vitamin K (potassium), and I think the other big one that can lead to hair loss is calcium (not so sure about that one though.)

Gaining weight back by eating lots of carbs is not going to do you much good as far as getting your hair back unfortunately.

Bella Harmony..

Thanks for all your sage advice. I lost my appetite due to stress. I just couldn't eat much. And I never thought this could affect my hair down the road. But it did. I'm concentrating on protein and lot's of veggies and whole grains. I've heard that your hair will recover, I hope so. I know I have to be patient and that it takes time. I really hope that is all it is. I went to a derm and she said it was TE brought on by stress and a poor diet. But I need to be re-checked in three months.

The derm told me that Head & Shoulders and Nioxin are pretty much the same thing. They just have zinc in them. Has anyone noticed a real change in H & S and Nioxin? She recommend Nizoral, too.

Oh my! Head and Shoulders and Nioxin are NOT the same thing!!!
From what I have seen from those who use H&S it causes dry scalp and doesn't do much for the hair condition either.

I have seen many people who use Nioxin see results within a couple of weeks. Their scalp is healthy, and they start getting new hairs growing in. My brother had a bald spot (genetic) that is now all filled in.
