In light of the current security restrictions at airports, does anyone know if it is still possible to take ones knitting on board? I am usually allowed to take my knitting with me because I use bamboo needles but I am not too sure this time with the tightening of security.

I would check with your airline and with the airports through which you will be passing.

I will be doing an article on this but the short answer is put your knitting needles in your hand luggage no matter what if you want to be sure they won't be confiscated - and if you must try it then keep a spare pair of needles in your hold luggage just in case.

I agree that plastic and bamboo circulars should be OK but I would still check. Don't take my word for it. Remember the case of the surgeon who was able to carry out an operation on board a plane to help a woman who had a punctured lung. He used a knitting needle as the piercing implement. If he could do it for a lifesaving operative procedure then someone could grab it off you and use it as a weapon even if you would never dream of doing such a thing. That's what they're worried about.

I actually will be flying myself early next month but I too will be checking with the airline and with the airport.

The airline says it is not a problem as long as I am using bamboo needles. I am really pleased about that.

OK I hope your journey goes well and you enjoy your trip!

Be sure to pack an extra pair of needles in your hold luggage and take a good book just in case the airport security doesn't like the needles and confiscates them - better safe than sorry and from what I've heard airlines and airport security staff don't always say the same thing.

I have some studying to catch up on so I will be taking a book will be with me also. I will let you know how I get on. I bought a new pattern today as I plan on knitting a jumper for my 2 year old grandaughter while we are away. The pattern I chose is Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply No. 1555. I will also be teaching the friend we are staying with loopy knitting.
