Someone please help me. I wash my hair about once a week which I think is all it needs. I do have think hair. But...........everytime I wash it it falls out quite a bit. I'll admit it does need cutting which im having done next Friday. But I am so worried. I have just turned 23. I eat Pretty well (could be better). Is there anything I can use on my hair to stop it falling out. When I bruch it it falls out. But worse when wet. Just wondered if any of you nice people could give me some advice. Thanks Lil Kim xxx

Well, over the week lots of hair starts to get loose, so when you decide to wash it, all this loose hair will come with it. Since you have thick hair, it's much more noticable. It really looks like you loose a lot, but remember that you may only be getting rid of 50 hairs a day with combing, while other losse hairs remain where they are and all get washed out when you decide to shampoo your hair.
Apart from that, always use a conditioner after you shampoo, use a wide-toothed wood or plastic comb, rinse your hair with cold water after you are done washing and rinsing it out, eat healthier and above all:

DO NOT BRUSH HAIR WHEN IT'S WET!!!!!
(seriously, this is a big no-no!)

Do you wear your hair in styles such as ponytails, braids, updos or others which would hold your hair and prevent it from falling out when it's shed?

We are supposed to shed anywhere from 40 to 100 hairs per day. But if your hair is not worn loose those shed hairs will not fall to the ground. So when you do let it loose it will look like big amounts are coming out.

Anything other than normal shedding is something you should see a doctor for. There are many things which can cause hair loss or extra shedding and it's best to find out earlier than later.

Hi, Thanks for replying. Yes I do wear my hair in a ponytail, everyday!. I am having my hair cut on friday so I will see what difference it makes. I always find when I have had my hair cut I lose less hair when i wash it. I'll let you know what happens!!

Thanks again, Lil'Kim xx

Isa and PurpleBubba have given great answers.
At the risk of repeating what they have said...
When you have long hair, it alway seems like twice as much hair loss as someone with short hair.

You always lose more hair naturally when you wash your hair. If you shampoo everyday, it should be about 50 hairs a day.

Some women (not often) begin hormone change in their twenties that causes hair loss. It just gets thinner but generally doesn't go so far that it is noticable to anyone else. Do other women in your family have thin hair? I always recommend Nioxin in this case. (I know I sound like a broken record - but I've seen it work and I'm sold!)

Did you go to your hairdresser? What did she (or he) say?

My hair falls out all the time when it's wet and so does my daughter's,(and she's only 8 with no health problems) so I'm fairly certain this is a natural occurance since hair is more fragile when it's wet. I've actually heard it's normal to lose up to 150 hairs a day. So...unless huge clumps are coming out or you're having serious thinning or bald spots,I think you'll be fine!

I'm 43 and I've just noticed that I have a lot more hair falling out - my ponytail is noticibly thinner. Since I've let my hair grow below shoulder length, I've had to loop my hair into a smaller ponytail to make it look thicker. Now even this is getting looser. Has anyone tried any products with success? I fear its hormonal (perimenopausal).

Also, I've been seriously thinking of cutting it really short again. I'm moving and I thought that it would be nice to make a new start with a new look. This time I wanted to try just taking it all off with a clipper to a fuzz. I just wonder how it fine thin hair would look.

My roomie and i used to talk about this all the time. If you washed your hair every other day than you wouldn't notice as much. Since you only wash it once a week all of those hair that would have come out during the week are coming out at one time.

My roomie always said, yeah your hair is falling out, but does it look thinner? As long as the answer is no, then you are fine.

I've also heard that every 7 years you shed more. I don't know if that it is true, but it was my Senior year of college i noticed lots of shedding (22 years old).
