People write poetry for the same reasons that they write plays, songs, stories, and novels. And for the same reasons that they compose music and create sculpture and dance.
The human mind and heart loves to create and communicate thoughts and feelings with others, and sometimes they wish to do so through beauty, and that results in art.
Also please realize that just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that someone else has tried to keep you from understanding it. Meaning is not "hidden" in art; it is implied through use of techniques such as metaphor and image, or melody, or line and shadow.
Since you are asking questions about these issues, they must be important to you. I do hope you will continue to seek knowledge until you realize the delight to be had from poetry and other forms of art.
