I recently saw a photo of the famous sweater. Is the pattern a freebie or is this something I would have to purchase? I would appreciate any info. Thanks.

The Surprise Sweater is an Elizabeth Zimmermann design, published in her book "Knitting Workbook". It's well worth the money though some of the designs are a little old fashioned nowadays. You can buy it from Amazon or from Schoolhouse Press at www.schoolhousepress.com - the latter is run by Meg Swansen, Elizabeth Zimmermann's daughter, and having used them myself I can recommend them.
