I came across this story in my LOHAS newsletter. It seems Wal-Mart is finally joining the green movement and providing some items in its stores that are organic and sustainable. Apparently an environment advocacy group is setting up an office near Wal-Mart's headquaters. I don't know how I feel about the Wal-Mart stores because I've never been in one! They don't have one in a 50 mile radius of where I live (San Francisco). Although I hear they are a lot like Target, which I been to plenty of times. I'm glad to see they are making some changes, because they could have a HUGE influence world wide. Here's the full article if you want to read it: Walmart article

All businesses are starting to gear up to being "green" due to recent legislation, and the promise of even stricter laws in the works.
Funny, I find that those who sing their own praises the most, of what should be considered the norm; are those who actually have the most to hide.
BTW Dont look now, but there are currently at least 6 Walmarts within a 50 mile radius of San Francisco at this very moment!! I have 3 within a 10 mile radius of my home in the east bay.

It would be a bit hypocritical for them to say they're going green, mostly because they're looking at building on an area in my town that's environmentally sensitve. They're right on the lake if they build there, and it irritates me a bit. But if they're going organic, I hope it's with the local farmers in their area. I don't know much else, so I'll have to read the link you've just posted there.

6 Wal-Marts close to SF!! That's obscene. I can only name 3 Targets, and that's only because they took over one site really quickly so Wal-Mart wouldn't move in. Wal-Mart must've stolen Starbucks' business plan.
I may actually venture out into one and see what all the excitement is about [note to self: leave wallet at home <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />]

I think there is a HUGE difference between Walmart and Target. I love Target and can't wait for one to be built here (Elko, NV) We do have a Walmart but they haven't really gone green yet, I think each Walmart is different. I'm sad to say that I do not shop there for food because I am not happy with the produce section, but to be fair maybe I am going on days that they need to stock or something.

I don't like Wal-Mart's produce either, but do find items that are lower priced than other stores I shop. I too like Target but have to travel 45+ min. to get to one. I think Wal-Mart should have a section of organic products just like Publix does. This will attract more consumers.
Have a great day

We have a several Walmarts close by in North Texas. I've only been to a couple of them-one is kind of trashy but the other one-the one I go to- is new and clean.
They definitely have more organics now! Even items like Ragu are getting into the organic act. I am part of an organic food co-op to get all my fruits and veggies but Walmart does carry many other organic things that I buy.
I noticed that Costco is also selling lots of organics now too.

We boycott Walmart because of their business practices (including use of child labor). However, I can verify that they have more organic foods than ever before. My mom shops there and has been talking about it.

Over a decade I began buying my toilet paper and napkins from Walmart because they were the only store that carried the Tree Free brand.

Walmart has lots of organics now in both fresh fruits and veggies and in bottled and canned items. It's nice to see it there.

But what about other goods besides food? I did notice a small rack of Earth Friendly socks tucked in in the boy's department. AND in the Ladies Department there were two small racks of Hanes Organic tees and pj's. I guess that's going Green for Walmart....If you really wanta to laugh P&G has it's own Green website.

Hi~ I have 5 WalMarts with 5 miles in any direction (Phoenix,AZ). WalMart is popping up everywhere. (So is, Target, Ross, WalGreens, Home Depot and the list goes on).
I own (and currently the only employee as well) of a reusable bag company (Greensak.com <--- plug).
I have studied and been a part of many programs that look into companies and making "green" changes. We *the people* are the largest corporation and we *the people* have to make the change. Walmart can sell organic pajama's all day, but it will not counter the thousands of other products that are not as friendly.
It is very simple. Stop buying so much. Buy things with less packaging. Reuse everything or give it to someone who will (post it on craigslist.com - someone wants it!)Put your cans, soda bottles, pizza boxes and milk jugs in the the recycling bin. Change your light bulbs. Ride your bike somewhere once a week. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth.
And last but not least - get reusable grocery bags (use your old beach totes etc...) or come to me greensak.com. Single use plastic bags are responsible for 12 million barrels of oil (every year),hundreds of thousands of animal death by choking and suffocation and one of the top 4 items found in litter.
Image if every single person (the people's corporation) did not use one plastic bag = 300 million plastic bags!
I can go on forever! but I won't. You are all welcome to email, I have hundreds of ideas that take little to no "personal time or energy" to do and sometimes takes *less* personal time and energy than the wasteful alternative.
I can't believe I went on and on..forgive me! Debi
