I'm a big fan of America Ferrera so I'm thrilled to hear she's going to have her own series this summer. If you're not familiar with her she was the lead in Real Women Have Curves and a supporting character in The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants.

The jury is still out on whether this is going to be a good show as she's really tormented in it. I watched an extended preview and was really beginning to wonder but it looks like in the end she will win out over all.

Watch a preview of Betty the Ugly, coming this fall.

I just hope they resist the temptation to turn this into an Ugly Duckling story and glam Betty up as she wins folks over.

Actually, I hate to break it to you, but Ugly Betty is just an English version of an immensely popular Mexican soap opera. They're doing it in English to try and cater to the non-Spanish-speaking Latino population in the States. And yes, Betty does get glammed up from an extremely ugly duckling. Surprise, surprise. If you don't enjoy cheesy soap opera melodrama, I highly recommend you sit this one out. Trust me, I've seen the original soap, Betty La Fea, and I was dismayed to hear they were doing an American rendition.

I thought it was great but was hoping they wouldn't make her over.

I watched the last half of the show and enjoyed it. This is a good family show. Betty has a good degree of independence, confidence, and is not afraid to pursue her dreams. If she continues to portray these type of qualities then she will prove to be a much needed role model for young females.

I love it. I really liked her in the other parts she plays, but she killed me last night. I hope they stick with Ugly Betty and keep it funny!!!

I don't remember her name but I LOVED HER in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and that's why I watched it. She's a gifted young actress. If you haven't seen the movie, it's great.

Her name is America Ferrera and she made her debut in Real Women Have Curves, also a great one you should see. I reviewed it here: [url=BellaOnline ALERT: For anti-spam reasons, we restrict the number of URLs allowed in a given post. You have exceeded our maximum number of URLs.

Correction: Actually Ugly Betty is a modified version of the original production from Colombia-Yo Soy Betty La Fea (I am Betty The Ugly). After it was a smash hit in Colombia, the Telemundo network here in the states showed the original version about 2 years ago, and it broke all kinds of viewing records for them. After that, the rest of the world followed, including Mexico which is currently running that version via the Univision Network here in the states, called-La Fea Mas Fea (The Uglies of the Ugly).

I'm a big fan of the original soap, and I didn't think it would work for the American audience. I started watching just out of curiosity and now I'm hooked. The producers have modified it to fit this market very well.

Thanks for the clarification. I love it. Did anyone else want her to hook up with Henry?

I LOVE this show too! It doesn't seem like a soap opera to me... there are more comedic elements to it. It has many good 'messages' in it without being to preachy.

I think it's neat how Salma Hayek (producer) hides in the background in the soap operas although I noticed this week she's going to be a main character flirting with Daniel.

I wouldn't call this a soap opera, but the show definitely has a more dramatic element to it than your typical show. I love how she's slowly winning her boss and coworkers over without changing herself.
