Tons of professors are in a tizzy over computer use, PDAs, cell phones, etc. in the classroom. Sure, some students are surfing the web or checking e-mail, but most are probably using their e-gadgets for educational purposes (yeah, cheating falls into that... but that's a topic of another post). I couldn't have made it through grad school without my laptop: notes, blackboard access, e-docs from the profs. I even submitted exam papers electronically (my handwriting is attrocious!). How many of you out there would have a problem if your profs said no more e-gadgets?

Frankly, I'd probably be one of the students checking email or surfing the web...but as long as I wasn't blatantly disrespectful about it and did my work (or even if I didn't--it's my dollar that's being wasted, after all), what, REALLY, would it matter?

I've never minded having students surf while I lecture; as long as they participate during discussion. It is, indeed, their dime.
