I think this is one of the areas where the verse "Judge not" really comes into play.
We can never know deep down why someone is a Christian; only God can. And it is not up to us to judge their reason for becoming a Christian. Many people may come first to the Lord out of fear of Hell, but later come to know Him for His love and goodness.
In my case I realized that I needed Christ because if i did n't have Him in my life, how could I ever teach my children about Him? it was up to me as their mother to be their example in living a Lordly life, and I wasn't doing that. i was scared to death that my children might possibly go to Hell because of me. Trust me that was a far greater motivator than even spending Hell in eternity myself.
Yet ever since then it has been so much more than that. I have come to know what He means to me - what the sacrifice on the cross really meant, what hope is, and faith - through even the absolute darkest moments of my life.
So let us introduce people to Jesus any way we can, but we definitely need to make sure they know of His love and mercy somewhere down the road.
