As it would be rude not to participate in this thread, my fav's include Argento's Suspiria, Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the like.

Most recently I have been impressed with The Descent, High Tension, Wolf Creek and the remakes of Dawn of the Dead and The Hills have Eyes.

As for supernatural horror, you cannot fault Robert Wise's 1963 The Haunting for great atmosphere, along with the classic The Devil Rides Out. I just wish someone would make a proper paranormal based horror these days...

Oohhh... I LOVED The Haunting when I was a kid. SOOO scary! I was terrified, yet didn't dare change the channel LOL. I saw the remake (with Liam Niesen sp?? and Owen Wilson). Was okay.... the original scared me much much more....

The only thing that keeps coming to mind is the The Canterville Ghost

Could that be it?

I think you are onto something! My parents would never have let me watch anything really bad- but that image really got to me. I think I read it in story form in my twenties & made that connection too...I'd forgotten this! Thanks for excellent memory jogging- time to rent it & probably thoroughly enjoy it!

The Canterville Ghost has one of my all time favorite movie quotes (I have this crazy obsession with movie quotes lol)

"Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace."-Oscar Wilde,The Canterville Ghost
